Tower Cranes

Tower cranes are predominantly used for the construction of medium and high rise city buildings. The factors that influence the decision to use a tower crane are:

  • where a project requires a crane for a long term
  • where site construction, congestion or access preclude the use of mobile cranes
  • where lifting frequency is high
  • cost considerations
  • height, weight and radius of lifts

There are two main types of tower cranes:

  • hammerhead crane (fixed or saddle jib)
  • luffing jib crane

Within these two types there is a wide range of lifting capacities and sizes available. They may be electrically or diesel powered and may come in fixed base, travelling base or internal climbing configurations.

Specific factors that influence the type of crane to be used may include:

  • weight of lift
  • jib length of crane
  • power requirements/availability
  • noise requirements
  • height of lift
  • climbing arrangements
  • freestanding heights
  • proximity to other buildings and cranes
  • foundation, erection and dismantling costs
  • tie in intervals, floor leadings
  • lifting area to be covered
  • lifting frequency
  • capacity and reach of mobile cranes/other cranes for erection/dismantling of crane
